After disappointing results in regional elections, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez from Spain's social democratic party PSEO has called a snap election to be held on July 23.

The right-wing made significant gains in the regional elections, led by the Popular Party (PP) with support from Vox. Polls predict PP's leader Alberto Feijóo is poised for a victory in the national election.

What are the central political rifts in the election campaign? And what is at stake for Spain, Europe and the country's upcoming EU presidency starting July 1?

On Wednesday June 21 José Ignacio Torreblanca guests Think Tank EUROPA’s series on webinars about European elections to answer these questions and lay out the prospects for Spanish politics.

Torreblanca is a Senior Policy Fellow and head of the European Council on Foreign Relations office in Madrid (since 2007) and a professor of political science at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia in Madrid.
