As Europe struggles to compete for global power, attention is once again turning to the single market as the backbone of Europe’s competitiveness.

All eyes are now fixed on Enrico Letta, former prime minister of Italy, who will deliver his much-anticipated report in April on how to adapt the EU’s single market to a new age of geopolitical instability.

Here the digital economy is becoming indispensable as an engine of economic progress and a source of security. A key task for the EU after the parliamentary elections in June will be to turn Europe’s digital capabilities into a pillar of strength and innovation.

But how? Zach Meyers, assistant director of Centre for European Reform, presents a range of ideas in his report Helping Europe’s Digital Economy Take Off: An Agenda for the Next Commission, published February 2024. Think Tank EUROPA has also launched a new network of six European think tanks to discuss these issues.

On March 13, Zach Meyers joins us for a conversation about the path to a stronger digital economy and what challenges lie ahead for the coming five years.
